Now fully revised and updated, including new and fun activities for dealing with school anxiety, social media overwhelm, bullying, and more。

Being a teen is hard enough without anxiety getting in the way。 Not only are you changing more than ever before—physically and mentally—you’re also facing an increasing number of global issues, such as pandemics, school violence, and climate change。 On top of all these big events, if you suffer from panic attacks, chronic worry, and feelings of isolation, it can be very difficult to meet your goals and succeed。 The good news is there are real, powerful ways that you can take control of your anxiety—and your life!

In this second edition of Mindfulness for Teen Anxiety, psychologist and learning specialist Christopher Willard offers teens like you proven-effective, mindfulness-based practices to help you cope with your anxiety, identify common triggers (such as dating, social media, or school performance), learn valuable time-management skills, and feel more calm at home, in school, and with friends。

You’ll learn doable skills for dealing with specific situations that cause anxiety, such as public speaking, taking tests, meeting new people, and more。 You’ll also discover special breathing exercises to help you stay calm in moments of panic, and guided visualization exercises to be cool and collected, even in the tensest situations。

If you are ready to move past your anxiety, panic, and worry and start being your best, this workbook will be your guide—every step of the way。

I was invited to review this book, and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity。 With fifty activities to choose from, help is never out of reach if you have a copy of Mindfulness for Teen Anxiety by Christopher Willard, PsyD。 The book is extremely accessible to parents and teens, with short, tightly-focused sections that included a small amount of descriptive text about situations a teenager might encounter in which they feel anxious and an activity to engage with and counter those feelings, I was invited to review this book, and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity。 With fifty activities to choose from, help is never out of reach if you have a copy of Mindfulness for Teen Anxiety by Christopher Willard, PsyD。 The book is extremely accessible to parents and teens, with short, tightly-focused sections that included a small amount of descriptive text about situations a teenager might encounter in which they feel anxious and an activity to engage with and counter those feelings, finished by a “Summing Up,” a mini-review, after each activity。 The book begins by discussing what anxiety is and how anxiety feels, and how to recognize our own anxiety。 It moves on to the ways in which anxiety manifests or is triggered and tools to keep it at bay - healthy eating, or being aware of distorted thoughts, for example。 Once the reader has been guided through developing awareness of anxiety and learning some general tools to recognize it and cope with it, the central thesis of the book begins to be developed, mindfulness and how to practice it as an anxiety-calming or eliminating technique。 Here, the activities change to “mindfulness practices,” which can be adopted by a teen or shared by a parent with a younger child - or incorporated into the daily life of anxious adults。 The beauty of the book is that it can be read all at once, or it can be considered a chapter at a time, giving the reader the opportunity to learn Willard’s suggested practices one at a time。 There is also a comfortable tone that suggests “take what you need and leave the rest for later,” which is in itself calming for the reader who might get anxious having 176 pages to digest。 Or, if there are practices that just don’t feel good, then skip them! (I particularly do not like the “body scan,” which I have found to be so common in mindfulness or yoga classes…it tends to make me more anxious! But this book reminds me that no one is forcing me to do it, and if it doesn’t work for me, it’s okay!)So, why is this book particularly useful for teens with anxiety? As a mom and now a grandmother whose kids have had to cope with anxiety, I wish I had had this book to give to my kids, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone whose kids - or any family member or friend - is struggling with this disabling condition。 Many of the mini-chapters focus on very common issues for teens - that moment when you are the new kid in the cafeteria; doing an oral presentation in class; test anxiety; driving。 The tone of the texts is friendly and accessible; it hits just the right sweet spot of gentle wisdom, and the voice of a kind friend。 Some of the suggested resources, like http://donothingfor2minutes (which can also be accessed through YouTube), are actually fun。 Somehow, the author has managed to establish a private and confidential, as well as confidence-inspiring, spot in which a teen will feel safe to engage with his ideas。 Some of my favorite activities include Lake Meditation, Three Rs of Mindfulness, and lists of moments to practice mindfulness。 Perhaps the best part of this book is that anyone can use it anywhere and it doesn’t require any special supplies or materials - just a mind and a body。 Thank you, Christopher Willard, for sharing your wisdom about such an important topic, and giving those of us of any age the tools to heal ourselves。 Can I change the title to “Mindfulness to Lower Blood Pressure for Adults”? 。。。more

I was granted an advanced copy of this text by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 This book is a great introduction the teen anxiety and offers suggestions and strategies for mindfulness。 I will definitely be recommending to my fellow teachers and using the strategies to assist my students in the coming year。

Easy and obvious strategies for teen anxiety。 That’s not a bad thing。 It can be quite helpful for parents too。

A really well written book, full of clear explanations and easy to follow strategies。 I particularly like the activities as they provide you with a great opportunity to reflect on your own experiences and consider triggers。 This gives the whole book a quite personalised feel。
